My Car Mar. 18th, 2007 @ 01:54 am
I've been meaning to take pictures of my car since I got it in November and I finally did it today. I set out in some random direction to take these pictures and when I finally got to a good location, the sun had already set. This is what I got. As always, comments are welcome.

Full set of pictures can be found here.

Tastes GRRRRREAT Mar. 15th, 2007 @ 12:09 am
Nothing taste better than home fried zucchini, mushrooms, and chicken. We've made this before so it wasn't a new recipe. Frying the food up in my new (small) deep fryer was new. The moment I started frying, I knew that these things would not be pretty. I kind of got the hang of it at the end but the little frying chunks (which I failed to remove from all of the previous frying adventures) collected on the batter before it could harden.

The phallic looking thing shown below (in great detail) was a sad attempt at refrying a leftover egg roll from last week.

Game Mar. 12th, 2007 @ 11:58 pm
I've started to play a little game with myself. The object of this game is to find some old food in the fridge, cabinet, pantry, etc, make it, and see if it looks any good with the use of the light tent. Here I found some Tyson fried chicken in the freezer. I cooked it in the oven. The sauce is made from a can of tomatoes with some herbs I threw in, and the rice had been sitting in my fridge for about...two weeks.

New Equipment Mar. 7th, 2007 @ 11:00 pm
And by equipment, I mean a black piece of poster board that cost 99 cents. I somehow also managed to buy a $30 portfolio case for those huge paintings to hold these cheap pieces of poster board. I think it may be able to put the pvc(henceforth known as "LIGHT TENT") inside this huge thing. If it does, then awesome, portable light tent, if not then I better start buying some more expensive poster board to protect.

Lost in time Mar. 6th, 2007 @ 09:17 pm
So I promised Laura that I would make her eggrolls when she came down for her spring break. Unfortunately, I thought this week was the week of the 12th (spring break) so I went ahead a prepped the eggroll filling and bought the skins. I was a week early and I was not prepared to let good food go to waste. I made them and then took pictures of them (I also invited Rob and Katya over to eat some).

For those who don't already know, I'm starting to get heavy into the geekdom. Tomorrow at work, we have potential customers coming in and some people at the office have to give a demo. We decided to get pocket protectors.

Gotta love the 3 pack!

I've always wanted to do food photography. I've taken pictures of food before but the pictures never came out like they do in cookbooks. However, with the light tent I can join the ranks of mighty food photographers turning things that taste like crap into savory dishes!

» Cheap Light Tent
Over the weekend, I finally created a variation of the cheap light tent for taking awesome pictures (see the d200). The most time consuming thing was figuring out the correct amount of lighting and sizing the frame. Aaron and I found this fabric that is used as curtain linings. There is some rubber on the back of it to prevent light from escaping. It was perfect for the bottom. I bought a cheapo bed set for the actual diffusing material.

Cost:
2 arm lights (9.99x2)=19.98
1 long arm light 12.99
pvc tubes and joints 7.00
bed set 7.49
curtain lining fabric 3.50
posterbacking from hobby lobby (for different color backgrounds) .69
3 white spectrum compact florescent bulbs @5500K (7.49x3)= 22.47
Total: 74.12

Actually, it isn't all that cheap. Rephrase. Everything but the lights were cheap. If you want even good lighting, you'll have to spend a bit on the lighting.

I am most pleased with how the pictures came out.

» My new love
My D200 came in Thurs. I'm super excited. I left a note for the ups guy to leave it at the door in case I wasn't there to pick it up. Of course he had to come by the 30 min. I was out to do an errand. I had James drive me down to the UPS place at 8:30PM and wait at the warehouse for about 30 min. to get my package. Regardless, I have it.

I took a picture of it with my d100 in a light tent (I made it over the weekend. This post is postdated).

» Frets On Fire
So last night Aaron and I went to go play Guitar Hero at Best Buy (until we got kicked out). We were hooked. We looked everywhere online for cheap knockoff guitar controllers for the playstation. Suddenly, a gasp. Behold Frets On Fire. Could it be? A free knock off of our beloved Guitar Hero? Yes! Aaron spent all night downloading songs. Today we fashioned my 19 year old IBM model M to a neckstrap and went to town. Here are the results.

The last time I bought a hand held video game system, it was the original Game Boy. I believe I was 12. The monochrome screen monster rocked my childhood with Tetris and Kirby's Dream Land. The monster took four AA batteries to function and had a cycloptic glowing red LED that indicated power. This did not come with a health warning.

Tweleve years later, I bought my second hand held video game system. It's the DS Lite. The design is simple, clean, and modern. The power light only comes on to indicate that the battery is low. The wireless feature is phenomenal. When another DS is in the area, you can start a conversation/draw session with that other DS. This thing actually fits in my pocket (when folded up). This thing is....cute.Yes, I did buy the pink one.

Note: The lighting conditions were terrible. I'm in the process of getting studio equip. to take better shots like these.

» It's so empty
Target the department store is known to cater to the younger, more chic crowd. It's trendy fashions almost rival those of more well known more expensive counterparts. As soon as one walks in, it feels as though one has stepped onto a walkway designed to show off the latest trends and fashions. The bright florescent tubes light up the white tile walking path while the background consists of an embossed deep red target logo alongside a shadow of itself from light casted from within. With target striving to be a fashion leader to the nations trendy, I was surprised at the direction these new SuperTargets are heading.
They sell food.
I went to my first SuperTarget yesterday to see what kind of food items they sell. Would it be produce and meat as the Super Wal-Marts have done or would it be something else? I darted straight for the large signed marked “groceries” and proceeded to walk through their aisles.
Everything was packed neatly away. Everything had its place. Coffee, Dairy, Snacks, Frozen Food. It may have been the lighting or it may have been something else, but the place struck me as incredibly white. The place looked like it was in a constant state of being radiated. Maybe that's why I got the impression that the place was so void, so clean, so clinical.
I felt uneasy standing there.
Maybe it was the way I brought up, but I don't think food should be packed neatly away into aisles in fancy looking boxes. I don't believe that food should contain ingredients such as high fructose corn syrup, sodium caseinate, or partially hydrogenated soybean oil with TBHQ to preserve freshness. I feel that food has a personality from the time it started growing and absorbing the sunlight to the point where it sizzles to release its aroma. I feel that when we eat food, we are sharing some sort of bond with mother nature. Some bond which reminds us that we are human. What this department store has done is strip food of its personality, stripped it of its life. Yes it was food, but it was only sustenance. It was the bare minimum to keep one alive.
Is that where our future lies? Trendy on the outside yet dead and void on the inside? Is that the kind of push that corporations want to make? Where are the local fresh foods? Where is the personality? Where is the life?
I managed to take a shot with my camera phone. I think they would have sent security after me if I were to take out my real camera.....

The first night I got to New Mexico Tech, I took a picture with my then roommate Steve. Five years later, we retook the picture.

» Lazy Days
Admittedly, I should be packing. I'm leaving for Las Cruces, NM this Saturday and I don't think I'm packed as I should be. But alas, I needed a break and headed to the new coffee shop at the plaza. The Manzanares Street Coffee House (MSCH) gives a breath of the intercity coffee house life to the siesta style living of Socorro. It's refreshing and I have been frequenting this place daily for about a week or two. My Achilles heel are the blueberry turnovers. Today, I got the last one and managed to take a picture of the delectable treat with my camera phone before I devoured it. Enjoy.

It's 3:28AM and I graduate at 11:00AM. I've known that this day would come, but I still feel giddy about it. I feel like I've been on a roller coaster for a couple of days, the excitement, the nervousness, the stress. I am an adrenaline junkie's dream.

» Recovery update
I'm still in the process of replacing and recovering data. I don't have a system in place to process and backup pictures so I've pretty much lost most interest to shoot. What's the point of doing something if you know it may be gone the next day? Perhaps that's a philosophical discussion for another time.

But here's an update of what I've done so far....

» Massiv problems
I have really never known the importance of backing up files. Normally when I feel a that a hard drive is going out, I'm able to buy another one and transfer the data before total failure. Not this time. One of the disks on the file server bit the dust and luckily for me, it contained ALL of my photos on it. Of course this is one of 3 or 4 harddrives that have had massive failures within the past two weeks. This is not my month for computers. Preliminary estimates are about 600 bucks to attempt to recover the photos. Does anyone have any good data retrieval places? Sorry, no pictures today :(

Note to everyone, backup early and backup often.
